Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

Understanding the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) with Prime Visa Consultants

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) stands as a gateway for international graduates from Canadian educational institutions to embark on a journey of professional growth. As a dynamic open work permit, it provides the flexibility to work for any employer in any location within Canada, allowing for unrestricted changes in employment.

Designed to attract and retain skilled and educated individuals, the PGWP serves as a pathway to permanent residence for those graduates who envision a future in Canada beyond their academic endeavors.

Recent Changes in 2024 for International Students and PGWP Applicants:

In January 2024, Canada’s immigration minister announced significant alterations affecting international students. Effective September 1, Post-Graduation Work Permits will no longer be available to students in public/private partnership programs, also known as curriculum licensing agreements. These programs, managed by private colleges, face restrictions to tighten oversight and close potential loopholes.

For Master’s graduates and those completing other short graduate-level programs, work permits will now have a maximum duration of three years. These changes aim to enhance control, particularly in private colleges operating under curriculum licensing agreements.

Applying for a PGWP:

Eligible graduates of Canadian educational institutions can apply for a PGWP within 180 days of completing their studies. Whether inside or outside Canada during the application, meeting eligibility criteria within the timeframe is crucial.

PGWP Requirements and Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for a PGWP, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Completed a program at an eligible Canadian institution lasting at least 8 months, leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
  2. Maintained full-time student status during each academic session of the program.
  3. Received a transcript and an official letter from the eligible institution confirming program completion.

Special Policy for Online Study during COVID-19:

During the pandemic, students completing 100% of their study online from abroad can still be eligible for a PGWP. Studies completed outside Canada between spring 2020 and August 31, 2022, count toward the PGWP length, even if completing multiple programs.

When to Submit a PGWP Application:

Within 180 days of applying for the PGWP, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Hold a valid study permit, OR
  • Have held a study permit, OR
  • Were authorized to study in Canada without a study permit (under specific conditions).

PGWP Validity:

A PGWP may be valid for up to three years, dependent on the duration of the completed study program. It is an open work permit, allowing work anywhere in Canada without employer restrictions.
